One of the most critically acclaimed, not to mention, heavily awarded films ever produced in this country, John Heyer's The Back of Beyond has scooped international prizes at home and abroad. The 1954 Shell Film Unit produced documentary, took out Best Documentary at the Montevideo Film Festival in addition to receiving a major citation in Venice where Heyer was awarded the 1954 Grand Prix Absolute. In 1955 Heyer also earnt a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary while the film claimed various prizes at international film festivals like Trento, Edinburgh, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Originally titled A Carrier Called Kruse, The Back of Beyond eventually saw legendary outback postie Tom Kruse awarded an MBA from the Queen of England for services to the community in the outback.
